Construction News

April 2008

The AHEOTA construction class was "in the field" from March 30 through April 25 at the Southeast Arkansas Intermodal Facility site near Wilmar, Ar.  Wet weather plagued our field time, but students got good experience freeing stuck equipment--in some cases more experience than was wanted!  Despite all the mud, students were able to gain valuable experience on the various pieces of equipment that we hope will stand them in good stead in the future.

We'd like to express our thanks to Anthony Hardwood Composites of Sheridan, Arkansas for their generous donation of a pair of equipment mats.  These mats allowed the class, during field exercises, to cross a creek and work the other side of the job without causing damage to the stream bed and/or water turbidity.  We greatly appreciate Anthony's tax-deductible gift, and their support of our program.  We'll have some pictures of the creek crossing posted soon.

February 2008

The construction class conducted a field trip on Feb. 28, 2008 to the new Arkansas One-Call facility located in Conway, Arkansas.  Approximately 17 students and faculty attended an excellent and informative presentation by Ms. Kristin Bryant, General Manager of the One-Call Center and Mr. Mike Gowan, Damage Prevention Coordinator. Mr. Pat McCarron with ArKups also spoke on the actual location and marking of  underground utilities.  A tour of the One-Call operations center by Ms. Bryant  provided an opportunity to see operators taking actual locate requests from contractors and determining precise work locations so as to provide accurate and speedy service.  Mr. Gowan provided a very informative review of not only the procedures required by state law, but also the reasoning behind them.  An excellent lunch was provided, and a question-and-answer session allowed students to explore different aspects of the law pertaining to underground construction work.  All in all it was a very good experience for the students, and will hopefully give them a knowledge of what the law requires, as well as a realization that by working together we can avoid costly damages and delays. Below are a few pictures of the event.
